Pergola or Patio Roof? How to Choose the Right Cover for Your Backyard

Search for backyard shade ideas and you'll quickly find the phrase "pergola with a roof". It's one of the most common things Australians look for, and it tells a story: people love the look of a pergola, but they want real protection from the sun and rain.

So what's the difference between a pergola and a patio roof, and which one should you build?

A pergola: open and airy

A classic pergola is an open frame of posts and beams with slats or rafters across the top. It's great for dappled shade and climbing plants. But it lets the rain straight through, and it only filters the sun.

That's why so many pergolas end up with shade cloth, clear sheets or a roof added later. By then you've paid for the structure twice.

A patio roof: protection built in

A patio roof is a solid roof from day one. It keeps rain, UV and heat off your outdoor space all year round, so your furniture, BBQ and weekends are protected. It can attach to the house, sit over the gutter as a flyover, or stand on its own in the yard.

In short, it's the "pergola with a roof" most people are searching for, but designed properly as a roof.

Insulated or single skin?

When you build your quote, you'll choose between two roof types:

  • Insulated panels: the upgrade for comfort. The insulated core cuts the heat radiating down on you and quietens heavy rain, and the underside gives you a finished ceiling look. Panels are 1m wide and come in thicknesses from 50mm up to 200mm. You can choose different colours for the top and the underside, such as a light colour underneath to brighten the space.
  • V-Line single skin: a strong, lighter-budget roof that still gives you full rain and sun protection.

An insulated roof next to the house can also help keep the rooms beside it cooler in summer.

Thinking of a thicker panel? The larger panel sizes need to be engineered specifically for the area where your patio will be installed. Contact our team and we'll help you choose the right panel for your site.

When a pergola still makes sense

If you mainly want a garden feature, a frame for climbing plants, or soft shade over a small courtyard, an open pergola is still a lovely choice. But if you want somewhere to sit when the weather turns, a patio roof is the better investment.

Pick your patio roof style

  • Attached roof: extends your living area straight off the house. It fixes to metal fascia, timber fascia, a timber wall or a masonry wall.
  • Flyover roof: raised above your gutter for extra height and airflow.
  • Freestanding: ideal over a pool area, outdoor kitchen or away from the house.
  • Gable roof: a peaked, feature roof, freestanding or fixed to a wall.
