Attaching a Carport to Your House: Fascia, Wall or Flyover?

If your carport will sit beside the house or down the driveway, attaching it to the home is often the smartest option. The house carries one side of the roof, so you need fewer posts, the roof line looks cleaner, and you get a covered walk straight from the car to the door.

The real decision is how it connects. That depends on what your roof edge and walls are made of, and how much height you need underneath. Here are your options, and how to choose between them in our online calculator.

Fixing to the fascia

The fascia is the board along the edge of your roof, behind the gutter. Fixing the carport roof to it is simple and low profile, and it works well when your eaves already give you enough clearance.

  • Metal fascia: common on newer homes.
  • Timber fascia: common on older homes.

In the calculator, choose Attached roof, then select metal fascia or timber fascia as the attachment type.

Fixing to the wall

When there's no suitable fascia, such as on a double-storey wall, a parapet or a garage wall along the driveway, the carport can be fixed to the wall itself.

  • Masonry wall: brick, block or concrete.
  • Timber wall: timber-framed walls.

In the calculator, choose Attached roof, then select timber wall or masonry wall.

Going over the top with a flyover

A flyover roof sits above your existing gutter instead of underneath it. Brackets lift the new roof over the house roof, which gives you:

  • more height under the carport, perfect for 4WDs, roof racks and trailers,
  • better airflow and a brighter, more open feel, and
  • a finish that looks like part of the house rather than an add-on.

Flyovers are a great answer for homes with low eaves, where a fascia-fixed carport would feel cramped. Choose Flyover roofs in the calculator.

What if the carport goes in front of the house?

If the carport stretches across the front of the house or out over the driveway, there may be nothing in the right spot to attach to. In that case, choose a Freestanding or freestanding Gable roof in the calculator. Check your council's rules on front setbacks before you lock in the size.

Driveway on a slope? Measure both ends

Many side-of-house carports sit over a driveway that falls towards the street. Measure the height at the house and at the outer post positions, and don't assume the ground is level. If the fall is significant, call us on 1300 133 381 and we'll help you get the post heights right.

Choose your connection in 30 seconds

  1. Sound fascia at a good height? Attached roof, fixed to the fascia.
  2. No usable fascia, but a solid wall? Attached roof, fixed to the wall.
  3. Low eaves, or you want height and airflow? Flyover roof.
  4. Nothing to attach to? Freestanding or gable.
